JWU slips past UNE in CNE action, 2-1

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- A goal on either side of the 1st intermission was just enough for Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) to secure a 2-1 Conference of New England (CNE) result versus the University of New England at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night (Nov. 8).

The visiting Wildcats (1-1, 1-0 CNE) received scores from Zoe Tow at 17:17 of the opening period and Marissa Lafferty at 4:03 of the 2nd to go up by a couple, and then relied on goalie Sofia Tamayo to make 15 of her 22 saves the rest of the way to seal the outcome.

Tow's tally was a rebound poked five-hole off a shot by Harmony Chicoose, with another assist to Ashlyn Libby. Lafferty's goal came in the power play, redirecting a shot from the point by Kailin Kane, who was setup by Madi Fox.

The Nor'easters (0-2, 0-1) cut into the deficit midway through the 2nd stanza when Grace Flannery lit the lamp by stuffing in a rebound for the sophomore's first collegiate goal [Watch]. Keely Kasputis and Danielle McCarthy registered the assists on the play.

Quality chances were limited in the 3rd, and UNE could only get an extra skater for the final 10 seconds. Tamayo received a game-high five blocked shots from defender Reese Middendorf to support the win for JWU.

For the Nor'easters, Kirsten DiCicco totaled 20 stops. Eliana Kane contributed a team-best four blocked shots to help keep the Wildcats from any additional scoring opportunities.

The teams will square off again on Saturday at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, R.I.
