WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
Hannah Humes scored the game's only goal with 5:34 remaining to give the University of New England a 1-0 road win over Western New England University in Conference of New England (CNE) women's ice hockey action Thursday night (Nov. 21) at Olympia Ice Center.
Despite leading in shots on goal for the majority of the evening, the Nor'easters were unable to get on the scoreboard until the closing stages of the contest. In the midst of a UNE line change, the Golden Bears were unable to clear the puck as Humes kept it in the Nor'easters' offensive zone, skated in on the left side and rifled a wrist shot just inside the near post for her first goal of the season.Â
Humes' tally made a winner out of senior goaltender
Kaleigh Laurendeau, who authored her second career shutout with a 30-save performance. Laurendeau racked up 26 of those 30 stops over the final two periods, including 17 in the middle frame. She made a pad save of a point-blank shot by Ziya Damas with under three minutes remaining to help preserve the shutout.
UNE (2-4, 2-3 CNE) held a 39-30 advantage in shots on goal for the evening. In addition to Laurendeau's strong performance in goal, the Nor'easters' defense was rock solid, blocking a total of 42 shots. Humes led the squad with nine in that category, while
Jamie Ryan accounted for six and
Eliana Kane five.
Kayla Ireland suffered a tough-luck loss in goal for WNE (5-2, 1-2), racking up 38 stops.
The same two teams are back in action Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
