BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Two goals from
Adria Tebo and 31 saves out of
Kaleigh Laurendeau helped the University of New England knock off Western New England University, 3-2, in a Conference of New England (CNE) women's ice hockey matchup at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23).
For the second time in three days, the Nor'easters (3-4, 3-3 CNE) beat the reigning league champions, as the Golden Bears slip to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in conference outings.
UNE scored all three of its goals during the opening period, starting with
Danielle McCarthy five minutes into the contest. After
Grace Flannery fed
Mackenzie O'Leary in the high slot for a wrist shot that rung the crossbar, the rebound fell softly in the crease and McCarthy was there to stuff it under WNEU starting goalie Kayla Ireland.

The visitors drew even at the 14:37 mark on a tally by Mabel Gerard, assisted by Alyssa Murphy, however, Tebo answered for UNE a mere 49 seconds later with an unassisted score to shift the hosts back in front. Western New England won a neutral-zone faceoff backwards but couldn't control it, and Tebo raced in to push it forward. While Tebo was hauled down from behind, and, ultimately slid into Ireland, the puck managed to trickle across the line.

Less than two minutes later, the Nor'easters went on the power play and only needed 11 seconds to make it count to go up 3-1. From the blue line,
Eliana Kane spotted Tebo alone in front, and Tebo's second touch was a no-look backhand for the five-hole goal

Jamie Ryan also assisted on the play. It was the third career goal for Tebo, who, just seven days ago, scored her collegiate first to down Curry College in overtime.
The Golden Bears clawed back midway through the 2nd on the a power play of their own, with crisp passing from Murphy to Maddie Pope to Ziya Damas on the left doorstep for the finish.
WNEU out-shot UNE (on goal) by a 27-16 margin over the final 40 minutes, including seven chances during a power play opportunity in the 3rd, and two more during 86 seconds with an extra skater, but could not solve Laurendeau again
[Watch moments 1 / 2 / 3 / 4]. The defense also contributed three blocked shots in the waning ticks; for the game, the Nor'easters had 18 blocks, paced by Kane and
Hannah Humes with three apiece.
The positive goaltending decision for Laurendeau was her third in as many starts this year.
For Western New England, Rachael Irving made 16 saves over the 2nd and 3rd frames to keep UNE in check and give her side a chance to rally.
The Nor'easters will next entertain Suffolk University on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
