Tebo puts UNE over Curry in OT, 3-2

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Adria Tebo scored on a breakaway with 9.6 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the University of New England to a 3-2 Conference of New England (CNE) women's ice hockey win over Curry College at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday night (Nov. 16). It was the first victory of the young season for the Nor'easters, who trailed by two late in the 2nd period.

With 18 ticks on the clock, Averi Curran pulled a defensive-zone faceoff win to the near wall, where Hannah Humes settled and flipped it in front of Tebo at the blue line, in stride. From there, Tebo left the only Curry player with a chance of disrupting the play in the dust and beat the Colonels netminder, Coriann Hoag, five-hole for her first collegiate marker [Watch].

UNE is now 1-4 overall and 1-3 in CNE games, while Curry drops to 3-2 on the year (2-2 CNE).

A late 1st-period (18:30) score by Danielle Reid put the Colonels in front, and Reid struck again at the 13:01 mark of the 2nd, during a seven-minute power play. The visitors even had a two-skater advantage for the final 1:48 of the seven, but could still only net the one goal. By the time things were back at even-strength, the shots-on-goal margin was up to 24-7.

But with less than two minutes to go in the middle frame, Danielle McCarthy blocked a CC shot attempt at the top of the circles and pushed the puck over to Grace Flannery to spring a 2-on-1 the other way. Flannery stayed wide and drew the defender as she entered the offensive zone before sliding it across to McCarthy with just enough time to control it to her forehand and squeeze it past Hoag [Watch]. UNE's scoring drought of over 188 minutes had come to an end.

Just 60 seconds later, the boost of energy led to the equalizer (2-2) for the Nor'easters. Anna O'Neill picked off a cross on the defensive side and flipped it to Amanda Forziati exiting the zone on the right. While Forziati's attempt to chip it to herself, around the last defender, caromed off a leg and towards the corner, she was first to retrieve it and caught Hoag by surprise with a tough-angle try that snuck through [Watch].

The teams played a scoreless 3rd period, as UNE continued to gain confidence and limited Curry to a mere four shots on target.

Kaleigh Laurendeau secured the goaltending decision for the hosts, totaling 27 saves in her first action of the year. Mackenzie O'Leary and Jamie Ryan supported the defensive stand with six and four blocked shots, respectively.

Hoag finished with 14 stops for the Colonels.

The Nor'easters are slated to visit Western New England University on Friday.
