BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine scored all three of its goals on the power play, as the Huskies defeated the University of New England by a score of 3-1 in a mutual women's ice hockey season-opener Friday afternoon (Nov. 1) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Ally Stymiest got the Huskies on the scoreboard at 6:10 of the first period, firing a wrist shot from the high slot that slid between the pads of UNE's goaltender.Â
The Nor'easters drew even six minutes later when
Emily LeBrun found
Amanda Forziati knifing across the slot, and Forziati ripped a shot short side into the cage.
Hannah Humes was credited with a secondary assist.
Â
Stymiest recorded the game-winner with just under 30 seconds remaining in the second period, as the Huskies were once again a player up. UNE failed to clear its defensive zone and Stymiest took advantage, skating in to collect the loose puck and snipe a shot inside the right pipe.Â
Again on a power play, the Huskies would tack on an insurance goal at 13:40 of the final frame when Madison Chagnon went top shelf after Southern Maine won an offensive zone faceoff. For the afternoon USM converted 3 of 4 opportunities with a player advantage and held a 34-23 margin in shots on goal. Haley McKim earned the victory with a 22-save performance, while Olivia Stewart contributed a pair of assists.
Kirsten DiCicco totaled 31 stops for the Nor'easters, who will open Conference of New England play next Friday (Nov. 8) when they host Johnson & Wales University. Puck drop at the Alfond Forum is slated for 7 p.m.
