BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The top-ranked Middlebury College Panthers scored four times in the opening 18:04 on the way to defeating the University of New England, 8-1, in field hockey action Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Blue Bolt Field.
Caroline Segal accounted for goals three and four, and added an assist on number five, to lead the way for the visitors (10-0). In each of the six regular-season meetings between the programs since 2018, Middlebury has entered at No.1 in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll.
Claire McMichael got the Panther offense going in the 4th minute, and later contributed an assist. Emily Stone supplied a pair of helpers, including on the goal by Lilly Branka that made it 2-0 in the 6th minute. On the back end, winning goalie Izzy Rednik did not face a shot in 50 minutes of work.
The Nor'easters (5-6) spoiled the shutout with 28 seconds remaining in the contest, when
Micaela Jacobs tipped in a drive by
Lily Clough. It was UNE's second tally in the all-time series against the Panthers, and the first of the season for the Jacobs, who also had two defensive saves in the 2nd quarter.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss totaled 12 stops between the pipes for the hosts.
Gianna Korisianos came up with a defensive save in the 3rd period to help.
UNE will be on the road for the next four matches, beginning with No.11 Bates College on Wednesday.
