LEWISTON, Maine -- Anna Cote netted her second goal in the 68th minute to lift No.11 Bates College to a 2-1 overtime result versus the University of New England field hockey team at Campus Ave. Field on Wednesday night (Oct. 9).
The Bobcats improve to 8-3 on the year, while the Nor'easters slip back to 5-7 overall. UNE is now 3-5 all-time when taking a nationally-ranked opponent beyond regulation.
Despite a 1st quarter where Bates controlled the action -- with six shots and six corners -- the Nor'easters managed to keep things level through 30 minutes. Defensive saves from
Micaela Jacobs and
Gianna Korisianos helped the visitors remain in touch.
The scoreless battle extended deep into the 3rd period, before a scramble in the leftovers of a penalty corner gave Cote a chance to poke home the first goal in the 44th minute.
UNE recycled one of three corners in the 4th to draw even (1-1) with 5:45 to play. Korisianos centered a hard ball from the right side that
Madi Robito redirected towards the left post and
Isabel Culver one-timed in for the equalizer. It was Culver's first tally of the season.
Bates, though, had all the opportunities in OT, and a second try on a corner play connected for Cote to seal the outcome. After receiving a pass in the middle with her back to the cage, Cote spun and pulled away from the last line of defense for space, before pushing a low shot through legs inside the right post.
Shot totals favored the Bobcats, 19-5, while corners ended up 10-6. Ava Donahue made one save to get the win for the hosts.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss turned away four in the setback.
The Nor'easters are slated to visit Wheaton College on Sunday.
