BIDDEFORD, Maine -- A 40th-minute goal by Lindsay Reidy accounted for all the offense as Western New England University defeated the University of New England by a score of 1-0 in a Conference of New England (CNE) women's soccer match at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5).
The Nor'easters (8-4-0, 2-1-0 CNE) had a pair of near misses while the contest remained scoreless, with two of their first three shots banking off of the posts.
The Golden Bears (6-1-5, 1-1-1 CNE) held an 8-4 edge in shot attempts during the 1st half, though, and Reidy broke through with a glancing header in the crease as she ran under a free kick service off the foot of Abby Free.
The visitors turned another free kick from the corner into a dangerous chance in the 53rd minute, however,
Sydney Balotin stepped in front of the curling trajectory and headed it clear at the back post.
UNE had the better of pressured moments following halftime, with a 10-7 advantage in tries at the target, but Molly McLaughlin finished off a seven-save day to preserve the clean sheet.
Anna Flaherty also collected six stops for the Nor'easters, who entertain the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Wednesday (6 p.m.) in their last non-conference outing of the year.
