SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Haley Kaczka scored with 3:53 remaining to give Western New England University a 2-1 result versus the University of New England on Saturday evening (Oct. 19) in Conference of New England (CNE) field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium.
The squads had played more than 30 minutes deadlocked at 1-all before Kaczka's team-leading 11th tally of the season, which came off a feed from Sarah Johnston. The visitors had three penalty corners and three shot attempts in the waning moments, but could not find the equalizer.
UNE (6-9, 1-2 CNE) had the only two shots of the opening frame and then were the first side to get on the board in the 22nd minute when
Madi Robito notched her fourth goal of the year. However, Johnston had Western New England (9-6, 3-1 CNE) brought the hosts level in the 26th minute.
Zoey Wexler denied three tries to backstop the win for the Golden Bears, while, after a busy 4th quarter that saw WNEU amass eight shots on goal and seven corners,
Dawn DeWeese-Moss totaled nine stops for the Nor'easters.
Micaela Jacobs contributed another two defensive saves down the stretch in support -- her 12 in 2024 is the most since 2012 (16).
UNE is back home for the first time in two and a half weeks on Wednesday (4:30 pm) against Colby-Sawyer College.
