Connell's foul shots lift Leopards to 86-85 win

BOSTON -- Jack Connell made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team a come-from-behind 86-85 win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Tuesday night (Jan. 9) at Tansey Gymnasium.

Connell finished with a game-high 35 points for the Leopards (6-8, 2-4 CCC), who trailed by eight at 83-75 with less than four minutes remaining. Connell made six 3-pointers and was 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. He also added four assists and three steals. Sam Goy supported in the win with 23 points and eight boards.

Jack Pyzynski poured in 23 points in just his fourth outing in a UNE uniform. He was 9 of 11 from the field, including a 4-for-4 showing from beyond the arc. Pyzynski also collected seven rebounds and handed out four assists. Adrian Torres played a strong all-around game with 16 points, seven assists and five steals. Adam Lux (15 points), Jayden Thornton (14) and Kyle Lombardi (10) also reached double digits in scoring for the Nor'easters. Thornton knocked down four triples, and Lombardi contributed six boards.

UNE had opened up a 45-39 halftime advantage as Pyzynski and Torres combined for 24 points in the period. The second half was back-and-forth for the majority of the frame until the Nor'easters began to gradually pull away inside of six minutes.

After a Lombardi bucket established the lead at eight (83-75), the Leopards would hold the visitors to just one field goal over the final 3:45 of play. Connell and Goy each dialed up three-pointers in the final minutes to help rally Wentworth.

UNE (5-9, 0-6) will return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. road game at Roger Williams University.
