WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College saw a double-digit lead sliced down the three with 5:56 remaining before closing out a 93-83 result against the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at Kanas Court on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27).
The Fighting Scots (5-14, 2-8 CCC) had gained the advantage in the latter portion of the 1st half, turning in a 14-2 spurt over four minutes to go up 43-30. The gap peaked at 16 just before the intermission (51-36), and things hovered between 10 and 15 all the way past the midway mark of the 2nd period.
UNE (5-14, 0-11) didn't go away, though, and strung together 10 unanswered points in a span of 2:26 to narrow the deficit to 72-69 --
Adrian Torres had five in the run. The Nor'easters had a look to draw closer on their ensuing trip, but the next five points went for Gordon, and the hosts had an immediate response the two times UNE got within six (77-71, 79-73).
Torres and
Adam Lux accounted for 29 points after halftime (17 and 12) as the visitors shot 53 percent from the floor, but the Scots had a 21-9 scoring advantage at the free throw line in the frame to stay ahead.
For the game, Gordon was plus-17 at the charity stripe (28-11) and had a 46-36 cushion on the boards. Bryce Smith led the Fighting Scots with 24 points, and Treyton Tebbs notched 22. Smith and Justin Yu, who had 14 points, both made 4-of-6 tries from downtown. Isaac Jarvis totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Torres topped all players with 25 points, which included 4-of-8 accuracy from deep.
Jack Pyzynski supported with 17 points and Lux posted 14.
Kha Cao Ra James collected a double-double of 10 points and 10 caroms.
The Nor'easters return to Biddeford to entertain Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.).
