Western New England gets past Nor'easters, 84-64

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University closed the 1st half on a 13-0 run to open up a two-point contest on the way to an 84-64 decision versus the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20).

The Golden Bears (13-4, 8-1 CCC) keep pace with Nichols College atop the league standings as the conference begins its second round of games. The Nor'easters, who head for Endicott College on Tuesday, drop to 5-12 overall (0-9).

Matt Houde came off the bench for the visitors to register 18 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Jake Harrison added 14 points, six boards, and five assists. Tim Restall and Cody Palazzesi each tallied 12 points, with a combined 19 of those in the 2nd half.

For UNE, Adam Lux collected a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds -- both numbers led all players. Jack Pyzynski tossed in 12 points and secured six caroms, while Zach Boulay supported with 11 points.

Early on, Mike Resnick gave Western New England a boost by going 3-for-3 from downtown to account for nine of the team's first 16 points. The Golden Bears extended the lead to 30-17, but 13 of the next 15 points -- with seven from Lux --  brought the Nor'easters back within a couple (32-30) at the 5:51 mark. However, the last three minutes of the frame belonged to the visiting squad and restored the double-digit advantage (49-34). WNEU shot 16-for-31 from the field in the period, which included 7-of-16 accuracy from three-point land.

UNE trimmed the deficit to 59-51 just before the midway mark of the 2nd stanza, and a three-point play by Pyzynski had the spread at 66-56 with 6:43 to go. But a trey from Palazzesi two trips later started to put the margin out of reach.

For the match, the Golden Bears connected on 27-of-55 shot attempts, while the hosts hit 33 percent and went 3-of-27 from deep.
