O'Keefe sends UNE to 4-3 OT victory over Salve

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Kevin O'Keefe scored with 2:45 elapsed in the 3-on-3 overtime period to give No. 9 University of New England a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 victory over No. 15 Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's ice hockey game played Saturday evening at St. George's Rink.

For the second consecutive night, the two nationally-ranked programs went to overtime. Friday night's result in Biddeford was a tie, with the Seahawks earning an extra point in the CCC standings with a six-round shootout decision. UNE responded in the back end of the home-and-home by grabbing two points with the extra-period road triumph. The Nor'easters (13-2-3, 7-1-3 CCC) are now unbeaten in their last 14 outings.

O'Keefe cleaned up a rebound of a Jayden Price shot on goal after Price had carried the puck up the right side to create the scoring opportunity. The Nor'easters never led on the evening until O'Keefe sent the visitors home triumphant.

Logan DiScanio had notched his second goal of the contest midway through the third period to force the extra session. Anthony Cinato and Brock Paul were credited with assists on the tally.

Salve Regina's Walter Baumann recorded the lone score of the first period, finding the cage with just 24 seconds remaining in the frame to send the hosts to the locker room leading 1-0.

UNE tied the score 1:51 into the second when DiScanio converted a feed from Cinato. Logan Calder lit the lamp 10 minutes later to put Salve Regina back on top before O'Keefe notched first goal of the evening at the 16:13 mark. DiScanio and Dominic Murphy assisted on the goal.

The Nor'easters held a commanding 55-25 advantage in shots on goal on the night. Billy Girard IV made 22 saves to up his record to 9-2-3.

For the second night in a row, goaltender Cayden Bailey was busy between the pipes. He stopped 51 shots for Salve Regina (12-4-2, 7-2-2), giving him a total of 96 saves over the two games.

UNE returns to action next Friday night (Jan. 26) when they host Curry College for a 7:00 p.m. tilt at the Harold Alfond Forum.
