BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Five different goal scorers and a total team effort on the defensive end powered the University of New England in a 5-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory over Nichols College on Friday afternoon (Sep. 22) at Blue Bolt Field to kick off Homecoming Weekend.
The Nor'easters (3-6, 1-0 CCC) have now won their last nine outings against league foes, after running the table during the regular season and championship in 2022. The Bison drop to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference contests.
UNE accumulated all of the offensive numbers in the match, racking up a 33-0 spread in shots and 17-0 margin in penalty corners.
In the 1st quarter, following a defensive save by Nichols' Zoe Nicholls,
Morgan Mast stuffed home the rebound at the left post for a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Nor'easters then struck twice during the initial five minutes of the 2nd on put-backs from
Emily Jacobs and
Madi Robito.
A penalty stroke conversion to the upper left corner by
Makena Valentine made it 4-0 in the latter portion of the 3rd, before
Lily Clough collected a long rebound off her own shot in the 4th and backhanded a drive past the goalie.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss (42 minutes) and
Savanna Harvey combined for the shutout on the UNE end, while Sophia Venable made 12 saves for the Bison. Kaitlyn Bedard also added a defensive save for the visitors.
The Nor'easters hit the road on Wednesday, taking on Wellesley College.
