PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Izzy Ward scored just over two minutes into the 4th quarter to provide the difference as Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) topped the University of New England by a 2-1 margin in field hockey action Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 20) at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Margaret Johnson raced up the right sideline and set up the deciding tally with a cross into the middle that Ward one-timed into the left side of the cage. The Nor'easters (2-6) otherwise had all the shots and penalty corners in the final period, but the Wildcats were able to hold on to stay perfect in 2023 (6-0).
UNE had leveled the match in the 23rd minute as
Shelly Tremblay notched her first goal of the season, lofting a shot from the left side of the arc up over the goalie and crowd in front.
Lily Clough and
Gianna Korisianos assisted on the play.
JWU controlled play early on, registering all five of the shots and corners in the 1st stanza. The hosts broke through in the 9th minute, when Ava Pontes redirected a shot from the top of the arc by Kaitlyn Freeman.
Sophia Brea totaled five saves to backstop the Wildcats, who finished with a 13-9 edge in shot attempts. For the Nor'easters, who led 6-5 in shots-on-goal,
Dawn DeWeese-Moss recorded three saves.
UNE returns home to entertain Nichols College on Friday (4 p.m.) as Homecoming 2023 gets underway.
