UNE rolls over Nichols, 18-3

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse scored the first nine goals of the game and never looked back on its way to an 18-3 victory over Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday.
 
Sydney Balotin and Barrie Guertin led the way with four goals each. Guertin also added an assist. Jenna Deschamps scored three times. Kelsey Hartigan, Abby McHallam, and Morgan White each provided two goals and an assist. Paige DeVries dished out three assists.
 
The Nor'easters (9-3, 3-1 CCC) led 6-0 after a quarter of play. Balotin scored three of the first four goals for UNE to put the host in front 4-0 at the 7:27 mark of the quarter. McHallam put in a goal and also assisted on a marker by Ann Chapman in the first. Deschamps rounded out the scoring for UNE in the opening period.
 
Hartigan scored twice and Guertin added one in the second quarter to put UNE ahead 9-0 with 6:21 to play until halftime. The Bison (8-3, 0-3 CCC) got on the board with a free-position goal by Madison Robichaud at the 5:58 mark of the second but they would not score again in the quarter. Balotin quickly took the ensuing draw in for a goal to extend the UNE lead. White and Guertin added goals less than a minute apart later in the period as the Nor'easters extended the margin to 12-1. Hartigan connected with White for a goal with 30 seconds left in the quarter to give UNE a 13-1 lead at the half.
 
Guertin and Deschamps each scored twice for UNE in the second half as the hosts continued to roll.
 
UNE dominated to a margin of 45-4 on shots and 37-4 on goal. Keagan Dunbar, Kaylee Lucas, and Emily Jacobs each had three caused turnovers to lead the Nor'easters who had 16 as a team on the afternoon.
 
Maria Turriza had one save in the victory. Keri Tremblay made 19 stops for Nichols.
 
The Nor'easters visit first-place Endicott College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
