Seahawks get past Nor’easters, 12-5

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Kelly Ventura scored six goals to lead the Salve Regina University women's lacrosse team over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at Gaudet Field on Saturday.
 
The Seahawks improve to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play, securing a home game for the CCC tournament with one game remaining. The loss cements UNE as the fifth seed with a 10-6 overall record and 4-4 in the league.
 
Ventura got off to a quick start with three goals over a span of 2:12 in the first quarter to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the 10:41 mark of the period. Morgan White put UNE on the board with her 50th goal of the season with 3:21 left in the first. It marks the 10th time a Nor'easter has reached the 50-goal plateau and the first time since 2019.
 
Salve Regina scored the first four goals of the second quarter to extend its advantage to 7-2. Cameron Baston put in her first of the game and also dished out and assist to Samantha Moleti, before Ventura added two more tallies. Micaela Jacobs connected with Barrie Guertin for a goal in the final minute of the half to cut the deficit to 7-3 at the break.
 
Baston started a three-goal run for the Seahawks in third with an extra-attacker goal at the 10:00 mark. Moleti put two in with a span of 59 seconds to make it 10-3 after three quarters. After a tally by Kayli Garcia to start the fourth, Sydney Balotin and Kelsey Hartigan responded with goals for UNE to cut the deficit to 11-5. Ventura put in her sixth of the game with 4:18 to play.
 
Despite the outcome, the Nor'easters had advantages in shot attempts (33-29), draw controls (13-8), and ground balls (33-27). UNE also forced 26 of 37 Salve Regina turnovers. Keagan Dunbar finished with seven caused turnovers and eight ground balls. White led all players with six draws, and added four caused turnovers.
 
Grace Haesche stopped an impressive 15 shots in goal for Salve Regina. Maria Turriza had seven saves for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters open the postseason on the road next Saturday. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
