BOSTON -- Erin Hancock and Julie Schriver combined to allow three hits over 11 innings as Wentworth Institute of Technology picked up results of 11-0 (5 innings) and 9-1 (6 innings) versus the University of New England to begin the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball schedule at Carr Diamond on Sunday (Apr. 2).
Briana Beverly totaled 5-for-7 on the day with four RBI to lead the WIT offense. Both Kaitlin Pettenger and Jess Rowe put up four hits and accounted for seven runs scored between them.
The Leopards (14-4, 2-0 CCC) scored in all four at-bats of
GAME 1 to support the pitching of Hancock, who also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two batted in. In the circle, Hancock yielded one hit infield single to UNE's
Makenzy Herron in the 3rd inning, while otherwise fanning six against zero walks.
Beverly had three hits in as many tries and knocked in three runs. Pettenger and Rowe each produced a two-run hit; Rowe's was a home run.
Mia Micucci struck out three for the Nor'easters (3-15, 0-2 CCC). Eight of the Wentworth runs were earned.
Beverly, Pettenger, and Rowe had two hits apiece for the Leopards in
GAME 2, with contributions from Alexandra Pina (2-for-2, 3 runs) and Jess Bollentin (2-for-2, 2 runs). Pina added a solo shot in the 4th frame to make it 8-0.
Facing their last out in the 5th, the Nor'easters extended things with an infield single by Herron.
Megan Chamberlain started the inning by taking her second hit-by-pitch, stole second, and eventually scored UNE's lone run. Following Herron,
Kenzie Bessette had the team's second hit off of Schriver.
Kara MacDonald surrendered five earned runs from the UNE circle.
