UNE pushes ahead late to defeat Keene State, 17-14

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team used an 8-4 second half to pull out a 17-14 victory over Keene State College on Saturday morning at Blue Bolt Field.
 
Morgan White led the Nor'easters (6-2) on offense with six goals and an assist. Abby McHallam had three goals and grabbed three draw controls, Kelsey Hartigan provided two goals and two assists.
 
Both offenses were strong out of the gate, combining for 13 goals in the first quarter. Two from White, McHallam, and Micaela Jacobs scored to give UNE a 4-2 lead with midway through the period. The Owls scored the next four goals in a span of 1:36 to pull in front 6-4 with 3:18 left in the first, and the teams traded goals down the stretch as Keene State led 7-6 after 15 minutes.
 
The scoring didn't stop in the second as goals by Jackie DeAngelis and Haile Ratajack gave the visitors their largest lead of the day at 9-6. The Nor'easters began to claw back into the game with a 3-1 span, with goals from Barrie Guertin, Emily Jacobs, and White to cut the deficit to 10-9 at the half.
 
Hartigan and White put UNE back ahead at 11-10 with goals 16 seconds apart early in the third quarter. Amethyst Phelps tied the game back up for the Owls with 6:01 left in the third, but White scored with 1:30 remaining in the third to make give the Nor'easters the lead for good.

Paige DeVries extended the cushion (13-11) while UNE was down a player in the fourth, before Micaela Jacobs struck again to make the margin three. Ratajack responded with three down the stretch to keep KSC within striking distance, but it wasn't enough.
 
Maria Turriza made 10 saves for the Nor'easters, who received five draws and three caused turnovers from Sydney Balotin.

Sarah Howe played all but 1:14 in goal for the Owls and made nine saves.
 
UNE opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday at home against Curry at 4 p.m.
