CANTON, Mass. – Curry College was on the wrong side of an 11-4 shot margin in the final period but managed to hang on and defeat the University of New England women's ice hockey team, 3-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice House.
The Nor'easters (7-10-3, 6-5-2 CCC) were able to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as
Carolyn Curley scored with 1:51 to play in the period. Curry (7-11-2, 4-8-2 CCC) answered with a power play goal by Hannah Berkowitz 2:49 into the second, with help from Ali Olorenshaw and Megan Sawatzky. Margot Oxman added an shorthanded goal at the 11:25 mark of the second to give the Colonels a 2-1 lead through two.
Oxman found Danielle Stein for a goal to put the hosts in front 3-1 with 10:57 remaining in the game. UNE closed the gap to 3-2 on a goal by
Meghan Hamilton with 8:36 left.
Lainie Lemieux and
Keely Kasputis helped on the score. The Nor'easters played with an extra attacker over the final 1:40 but were unable to score again.
The Nor'easters outshot the Colonels on the day by a 29-24 margin. Soleil Archambeault earned the victory in goal with 27 saves.
Delanie Corcoran had 21 stops for UNE.
UNE returns to home ice on Friday against Endicott at 7 p.m.
