Panthers hold on to defeat Nor’easters, 10-8

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Plymouth State University men's lacrosse picked up a season-opening 10-8 victory over the University of New England on Monday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.
 
The Panthers (1-0) looked like they were going to run away with the game scoring three times in the opening 3:25. Mike Fleury, Jake Dolcimascolo, and Matt Miner put Plymouth State up early. The Nor'easters (1-2) battled back to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:14 left in the first quarter with goals by Finn McCoy, Jordan White, and Colin Watt. Crosby Fay scored with 16 seconds left to put the visitors ahead -3 after a period.
 
Andrew Albano found McCoy for his second goal of the game early in the second quarter to tie the score at 4-4. Fay, Nolan Burke, and Fleury added goals for the Panthers down the stretch as they led 7-4 at halftime.
 
UNE outscored Plymouth State in the second half but were unable to pull closer than one goal the rest of the way. A three-minute locked-in penalty for the Nor'easters only conceded one goal to tie the Panthers' largest lead of the day at 8-5 with 7:37 to play in the third. Shea Fogarty and White scored 41 seconds apart late in the third to trim the deficit to 8-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
 
The teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter and a marker by Watt from Andrew Lawrence made it 9-8 visitors with 7:26 to play. The Panthers were assessed a non-releasable two-minute penalty but the Nor'easters were unable to take advantage. Dolcimascolo scored his third of the day with 3:56 to play to give Plymouth State a late two-goal lead.
 
UNE outshot Plymouth 42-31 on the day and was 24-20 on goal. Owen McNichols had 16 saves in the victory. Evan Hazard made seven saves and allowed seven goals in 35:23 in net for the Nor'easters. Alex Thoms had three saves and three allowed in the final 24:37.
 
The Nor'easters are back in action at home against Emerson on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
