Fighting Scots pick up 105-88 win over UNE

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Gordon College shot 55 percent from the field, including 50 percent from downtown, on the way to a 105-88 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball result versus the University of New England on Tuesday night (Dec. 5) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

Treyton Tebbs and Justin Yu paced the Fighting Scots (2-6, 1-1 CCC) with 27 and 26 points, respectively, while combining evenly to make 18-of-27 live-ball looks. Tebbs finished with a double-double by collecting a game-best 14 rebounds, and also dished out eight assists. Yu canned 8-of-9 three-pointers; the rest of the squad made three.

Gordon received support from Sean Quanico (12 points), Micah Steely (11 points, 8 rebounds), and Bryce Smith (11 points). The visitors were able to overcome more than twice as many turnovers than UNE (17-8) with 35-for-64 field goal accuracy.

UNE (5-5, 0-3) attempted 22 more shots than the visitors did, but only hit at a 34 percent rate (29-for-86). The Nor'easters did hold a sizable advantage in points off turnovers, at 30-7, and converted 21 offensive boards into a 24-15 edge in second-chance points.

The hosts got team-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds (9 offensive) out of Adam Lux. Zach Boulay made 6-of-10 from the floor en route to 18 points, while Adrian Torres wound up with 17, and 16 more came from Jayden Thornton.

Gordon didn't miss during a 3:10 span just before the midway mark of the 1st period, pushing a 15-10 lead up to 29-12. Runs of 12-0 and 9-3 stretched the margin to its peak of 30 (56-26) before the Nor'easters trimmed the gap to 57-32 at the break. Yu splashed five triples in the half, and GC's shooting efficiency was fractions under 60 percent (22-for-37).

A nine-point surge early in the 2nd had UNE back within 17 (61-44), only to see a quick 10 unanswered by the Scots bump it back up. The Nor'easters immediately logged a 14-2 run to close the gap to 15 (77-62), but treys from Quanico and Yu, in short order, cooled most of the momentum gained by the hosts.

Boulay, Torres, Lux, and Thornton all scored in double digits during the final frame, as UNE notched a season-best 56 points in the half.

The Nor'easters are off until January 2 when the University of Hartford comes to town.
