Nor'easters, Rams end in 1-1 draw

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England and Suffolk University skated to a 1-1 overtime tie in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's ice hockey action at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night (Dec. 1).

Once the teams each secured 1.5 points for the league standings, the Rams took the shootout in four rounds by a 2-1 margin.

The teams complete the weekend series in East Boston on Saturday.

The visitors had nearly double the shot attempts of UNE in the contest, though the difference of ones reaching the target was only 37-27. Delanie Corcoran turned in 36 saves for the Nor'easters, who also blocked 29 shots -- four apiece from Eliana Kane, Piper Desorcie, and Anna O'Neill, and three each by Mackenzie O'Leary and Jamie Ryan.

On the other side for Suffolk, Lily O'Neil had 26 stops, including the biggest save of overtime, denying a late point-blank chance after UNE's Hannah Humes handled around two defenders. O'Neil also made the only save of the shootout to seal it.

The Rams struck first in regulation, just 4:26 into the 1st period, on a goal from Alessia Di Silvestro. The shots-on-goal disparity was 16-5 through 20 minutes.

The Nor'easters found the majority of the opportunities in the 2nd (11-6), though, and cashed in on a power play ahead of the midway mark (9:03) to level the score. Adria Tebo won a battle along the boards in the neutral zone, and Mia LaPlante connected with Desorcie trailing the play across the blue line for a wrist shot from the top of the left circle [Watch].

On almost consecutive possessions during the initial portion of the 3rd, O'Neil and Corcoran were both called upon to make clutch saves in threatening moments that kept the score tied [Watch].

Following a couple of flurries of pressure by the Rams down the stretch, UNE had the final 1:34 on a power play. The Rams limited the hosts to just three tries before the buzzer (one on-goal), and survived the 26 additional seconds of 4-on-3 at the beginning of OT.
