BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Delanie Corcoran tallied 38 saves as the University of New England ice hockey team was out-shot by more than double but came away with a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) triumph against Western New England University on Friday night (Nov. 3) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Attempts at the cage favored the Golden Bears by a 78-35 margin, and shots on target wound up at 39-15. In front of Corcoran, the Nor'easters added 15 blocks, with four by
Eliana Kane and three more from
Jamie DuPont.
UNE improves to 2-1-0 (1-0 CCC) with the win, while Western New England drops to 0-1-1 (0-1). The squads will face-off again Saturday night in West Springfield, Mass.
Early offense helped the hosts withstand the seemingly endless pressure.
Anna O'Neill netted her third goal of the season just 3:45 into the contest with a wrist shot from below the left dot that found a small opening at the near-side post under the crossbar.
Jamie Ryan caught the Golden Bears in the midst of a line change after
Adria Tebo slowed a clearing attempt in the neutral zone; Ryan immediately ushered it deep for O'Neill to chase down.

All of 58 seconds later,
Piper Desorcie fed

The Golden Bears trimmed the deficit in half just over three minutes into the 2nd period on the power play, as a rebound fell to Abby Hay at the left post to stuff one in. A shot from Jenna Lynch at the blue line and another by Alyssa Murphy on the doorstep were both denied in rapid succession by Corcoran before Hay found it.
The remaining 36-plus minutes went scoreless, though, as Corcoran and UNE defense held strong, including through the final 2:44 of the 3rd when WNEU had an extra skater. A dozen of the blocked shots by the Nor'easters were recorded after it became 2-1.
Rieley Jessie-Gerelli posted 13 saves in the loss for the Golden Bears.
