MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The University of New England women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) outing Saturday night (Nov. 18) at St. George's Rink. Continuing on to the new shootout format, with tiebreaking value at the end of the season, the Seahawks came away with that decision.
Unbeaten during live action over the last two weekends (2-0-2), the Nor'easters move to 4-2-2 overall on the year and 3-1-2 in the CCC. After four wins in as many tries when entering the series, the Seahawks exit at 4-1-1 and 2-1-1 in league games.
UNE never trailed in the contest, gaining a 1-0 lead in the 1st period. The only tally of the opening 20 minutes came off the stick of
Mia LaPlante, who redirected a slapshot from
Hannah Humes with just over 13 minutes gone.
Jamie DuPont assisted on the goal.
After Kyra Mittendorf leveled things with a shorthanded score late in the 2nd, DuPont found the back of the net herself with five minutes elapsed in the 3rd to move the Nor'easters in front at 2-1.
Jamie Ryan put a wrister on-target from the left point and the rebound fell into the feet of
Keely Kasputis, before DuPont stepped in to punch it through from a low angle.
Ashtyn Bringardner answered for the hosts 3:06 later.
Two shots apiece in the 3-on-3 overtime didn't solve the deadlock, triggering the shootout. Gina Richard of SRU was the only player to convert the opportunity in the fourth round.
Delanie Corcoran totaled 22 saves for UNE, while Sydney Baxter logged 17 stops for the Seahawks on the opposite end. Ryan had a game-best three blocked shots to help out Corcoran.
The Nor'easters resume their schedule next Saturday (4 p.m.) at home against Trinity College.
