BIDDEFORD, Maine -- With contributions from four different goal scorers, No.10 Bates College secured a 4-1 field hockey result against the University of New England at Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 3).

The Bobcats improve to 5-3 overall on the season, while the Nor'easters slip back to 3-8 -- with five setbacks to nationally-ranked opponents.

Maria Femia collected a rebound in the middle and netted her team-leading sixth goal of the year to open things for the visitors after just 46 seconds of action. Bates added two early in the 2nd quarter off the sticks of Sarah Bussell (18th minute) and Anna Cote (20th). Paige Cote assisted the Bussell tally for Bates, which accounted for all 16 shot attempts and eight penalty corners during the first half.

The margin became four in the 41st minute on a goal by Molly Griffin, and Bobcats starting goalie Kaili Jacobsen exited the contest at the conclusion of the 3rd period with one save.

UNE spoiled the shutout bid in the 48th minute on a corner play. Lily Clough and Francesca Caccamo worked a give-and-go to get around a defender and setup Clough in the heart of the circle for a shot towards the left post that was tipped over the keeper's pad by Madi Robito [Watch]. Robito's third goal of the season was the team's first against ranked competition.

Dawn DeWeese-Moss finished with six saves for the Nor'easters, who received one defensive save apiece from Micaela Jacobs and Lauren Green. Bates ended with a 26-3 advantage in total shots, and 13-3 in corners.

UNE stays at home for a busy weekend versus Western New England University (Saturday, 1 p.m.) -- winners of its first nine games of 2023, now 9-1 -- and Wheaton College (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
