Fighting Scots nip UNE in CCC tourney, 1-0

Statistics

WENHAM, Mass. -- A 65th-minute goal from Kendra Wentling was the difference as No.4 Gordon College edged fifth-seeded University of New England, 1-0, in the opening round of the 2023 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Soccer Championship played Sunday afternoon (Oct. 29) in rainy conditions at Brigham Athletic Complex. The game had been unexpectedly delayed 17 hours due to a malfunction with the facility lights.

The Fighting Scots (10-4-4) advance to the semifinals and will face top seed Western New England University, which earned a bye through the first weekend [Championship Bracket]. GC is unbeaten over its last eight contests.

The year comes to an end for the Nor'easters with an overall record of 7-5-5.

Following a scoreless 1st half in which UNE held a 10-0 advantage in shot attempts, Gordon's fourth look of the 2nd period got through as Kristi DiRico found Wentling for a shot into the upper-right corner.

The hosts managed to limit the Nor'easters to just two shots the rest of the way, and neither were on target. Emily Bengtson finished with four saves in the clean sheet for Gordon.

Goalkeeper Sydney Gillingham had two stops for UNE, which was the only conference program to defeat the Fighting Scots during the eight-game regular-season slate.
