HOLDERNESS, N.H. -- After No.5 University of New England closed to within one before the middle of the 2nd period, Will Redick netted three goals over the next 20 minutes to propel No.12 Plymouth State University past the Nor'easters, 5-1, as the 2023-24 men's ice hockey season got underway Friday evening (Oct. 27) at Hanaway Rink.

The previous two years, UNE had eliminated the Panthers from the opening round of the NCAA Championship.

PSU fired off a 15-6 advantage in shots during the 1st stanza -- its highest total of any period -- but the only one to get by Billy Girard IV was an attempt from Payton Schaly at the 12:48 mark.

Donte' DiPonio made it 2-0 for the hosts less than five minutes into the 2nd, however 2:25 later (7:11), the Nor'easters were right back in it at 2-1. On the power play, Jayden Price passed to Juraj Elias at the right point and Elias sent one towards the cage that Ryan Kuzmich redirected through, just one second before the man-advantage was over.

UNE was whistled for three penalties in short order, though, and Redick finished on two of them (9:48, 15:59) to push the spread to 4-1. Schaly picked up his second point with an assist on the fourth PSU tally.

The Nor'easters pressed forward in the 3rd, with a 15-11 edge in shots and three power plays, but could not solve Kalle Andersson again. Andersson posted 31 saves in the victory, while Girard totaled 34 for the visitors. Tyler Healey had a game-high three blocked shots to help against the Panthers' attack.

UNE opens its Commonwealth Coast Conference slate next Friday at Western New England University.
