UNE stays perfect in CCC with 7-1 win over Gordon

Statistics

WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England secured at least a share of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season title in field hockey with a big 7-1 victory over Gordon College at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 21).

Now winners of five straight outings, the Nor'easters level off their overall record at 8-8. UNE stands 4-0 atop the conference standings with just a road match against Endicott College (3-1 CCC) remaining next Saturday.

Six different players found the back of the net for the visitors, who scored one in the 1st quarter, one in the 2nd, four in the 3rd, and one in the 4th. Shots were 60-3 in the game, and corners were 31-1.

Kate Kelso started the scoring in the 9th minute off a feed from Madi Robito, and Makena Valentine finished a corner insert from Micaela Jacobs in the 26th minute to establish the 2-0 lead at halftime.

Morgan Mast, Lily Clough, Jacobs, and and penalty stroke from Valentine broke things wide open in the penultimate period; Shelly Tremblay added helper on Clough's tally.

In the final frame, Olivia Dwyer got on the board with her first collegiate goal to make it 7-0 in the 52nd minute. However, less than one minute later, Gordon's lone corner produced a score to end the shutout bid, as Madison Ahern sent an aerial shot that UNE sticks couldn't keep out.

Dawn DeWeese-Moss didn't have to face any action in 41 minutes as the starting goalie for the Nor'easters, and Savanna Harvey made one stop the rest of the way. On the opposite side for the Fighting Scots (0-9, 0-4 CCC), Sophea Zaskoda logged 29 saves.

Prior to the finale showdown at Endicott, UNE will entertain No.2 Babson College on Tuesday (6 p.m.).
