BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University missed only two shots during a 32-8 3rd quarter as the Hawks pulled away from the University of New England to a 69-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball result on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) at the Campus Recreation Center.
The Hawks (16-3) remain unbeaten in league matches, at 12-0, and now hold a three-game cushion over the Nor'easters (13-6, 9-3 CCC) in the standings.
Katie Galligan and Sophia Coppola paced the hosts with 14 points apiece. Kendi Barnard supplied 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, while Caroline Elie added 12 points, seven boards, and four assists. Roger Williams posted 53.6 percent on its field goal attempts (30-for-56), which led to 50 points in the paint.
Similar to the January 3 meeting between the squads, UNE held the advantage after one period (13-10). The visitors used an 11-2 run in the middle of the frame, powered by five fromÂ
Keagan Dunbar. Dunbar's second basket put her over the 1,000-point career milestone -- she had 748 in 73 games at Colby College before arriving in Biddeford this season.
The lead flipped in the 2nd, as the Hawks recorded the only nine points through the initial 7:48 of the stanza. A closing three-point play by
Faye Veilleux got the Nor'easters back within a possession at the break (23-20).
Roger Williams wasted little time padding the margin following halftime, scoring 17 points prior to UNE first field goal. The Hawks went 14-for-16 from the floor in the quarter.
For the Nor'easters, Veilleux topped all scorers with 17 points, and corralled six boards. Dunbar wound up with six points;
Nora Barmashi finished with six rebounds and five steals. The team made just 27 percent of its field goal tries in the contest (14-of-52), including only 1-of-15 from deep.
UNE is back at home on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) to entertain Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-12 CCC).
