Salve Regina takes league game from UNE

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Salve Regina University men's basketball team logged a 98-54 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) result against the University of New England at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 14).

With the win, the Seahawks move to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in CCC action. The Nor'easters slip back to 2-13 (0-8 CCC).

Jack Kruse paced the hosts with game highs of 22 points and nine rebounds, and his 6-of-9 accuracy from three-point range accounted for nearly half of the squad's 13 treys. Mike Spencer had 21 points in 18 minutes of action, while Declan Walmsley chipped in with 19 points and six caroms. Clay Brochu and John McMullen each went for 11 points; Brochu and Jojo Powers both dished out seven assists.

Salve Regina shot 54.8 percent from the field (34-for-62) and was practically just as efficient from downtown. The Seahawks finished with a 48-28 edge on the boards, and converted 16 UNE turnovers into 24 points going the other way.

For the Nor'easters, Adrian Torres posted 15 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Kyle Lombardi supplied nine points for the visitors, who connected at just under 30 percent from the floor in the contest (19-for-64).

SRU jumped out to a 16-0 lead 5:16 into the match, however the margin was only one (16-15) at the 11:25 mark. Torres had 10 of UNE's 15 unanswered. But the Seahawks then closed the opening half on a 39-9 run.

The Nor'easters are back in home Wednesday versus Suffolk University.
