WATERVILLE, Maine – Jake Fuss scored the game-winning goal with 1:46 to play to help #14 University of New England past Colby College, 3-2, in a non-conference men's ice hockey contest at Kelley Rink on Tuesday.
A pair of goals by
Jared Christy gave the Nor'easters (9-3-1) a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of action. His first of the game came unassisted just 2:31 into the night. Christy doubled the UNE advantage at the 17:51 mark of the second period.
Ryan Kuzmich and
Noah Szretter provided assists on the goal.
Drew Burke put the Mules (7-5-0) on the board as he scored an unassisted goal with 10:37 to play in the third. Late in a power-play with just 3:43 remaining in regulation, Connor Gallagher knotted the game for Colby with help from Jack Sullivan.
Just under a minute later, an elbowing penalty by the Mules led to an extra-man opportunity for UNE. Fuss made the most of the power-play, scoring his fourth goal of the season on an assist from
Chip Hamlett and Kuzmich.
Billy Girard IV stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced on the night for the Nor'easters to earn the victory in net. CJ Hapward had 21 saves for the Mules.
UNE returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Friday night at home in a rematch of last season's conference championship game against #4 Endicott at 7 p.m.
