GORHAM, Maine -- Rachel Melampy registered 22 points to pace Maine Maritime Academy in a 3-1 women's volleyball decision (25-9, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 3) at Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.
The Mariners (2-0) rattled off 15 unanswered points to capture the initial set, but things were back level when the Nor'easters (1-2) tallied the last five to take the 2nd. The teams exchanged large runs that balanced each other out in the 3rd, as a 12-2 MMA cushion was completely gone by point 25 (13-12 UNE), but then an 8-1 stretch gave the Mariners enough to move in front for good. Things were never separated by more than three in the 4th until MMA tallied five in-a-row for a 23-19 edge. Errors by the Mariners let UNE back within two, but Melampy closed the match with a kill.
Melampy dialed up 16 kills and six aces, to go with 13 digs. Sam Urch had nine kills, and Katie Albritton put up 43 assists. Along the back line, Hunnie Zuber-Stephens recorded 18 digs and five aces.
For the Nor'easters,
Lauren Davenport chalked up nine kills and
Addie Miller went for 22 assists, 13 digs, and three aces.
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray helped the defensive stand with 12 digs.
