BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Behind a 21-kill performance from
Lauren Davenport, the University of New England notched an impressive 3-1 women's volleyball victory (25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16) over Roger Williams University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Saturday afternoon (Sep. 24) on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Winners of back-to-back matches, the Nor'easters (3-8, 1-1 CCC) tallied just their third result against the Hawks (4-7, 1-1 CCC) since the start of the 2007 season (26 meetings). Aside from UNE wins in 2008 (3-2) and 2016 (3-1, postseason on the road), RWU has had a decided edge in the series -- including 16 sweeps.
But the 2022 matchup told a different story. The hosts never trailed in the first two sets, and only after Roger Williams closed the 3rd with six points in-a-row did things progress into the 4th.
UNE raced out to an 8-2 cushion in the opening frame, and the spread peaked at 13-3
[Watch 6 / Watch 10-13]. The Hawks managed to narrow a 17-10 deficit to just one, at 19-18, but two kills apiece from
Grace Mueller and
Viktoria Pavlyuk helped finish it off
[Watch 20-21 / Watch 24-25]. The Nor'easters hit at .324 clip in the session, with 10 kills and only one error between Davenport and Pavlyuk.
Another 8-2 start in the 2nd was more than enough for UNE, which maintained at least that margin the rest of the way
[Watch 8 / Watch 25]. Defensively, the Nor'easters held the Hawks to their lowest set attack percentage in the contest (.000).
The hosts separated from a 13-all deadlock in the 3rd
[Watch 15-16Â / Watch 19-20], going up 23-19, but a few UNE errors along with two kills and a shared block from RWU's Jillian Smith turned the set for the visitors.
A timeout down 7-3 in the 4th was the reset the Nor'easters needed to prevail, as things quickly flipped with a 7-1 spurt (UNE 10-8).
Kailyn Reilly put away the first of five blocks in the stanza to start UNE back, followed that with a service ace, and eventually a solo stuff by Pavlyuk capped it in emphatic fashion
[Watch 6 / Watch 13 / Watch 15-17 /Â Watch 24-25].
Davenport, who had seven kills in the 4th to comfortably clear her season high, also ended with 17 digs and three service aces. Pavlyuk piled on 15 kills, and
Addie Miller joined Davenport with a double-double of 42 assists and 15 digs. Individually, Mueller (8 kills/1 error), Reilly (5 kills/1 error), and
Olivia Hand (5 kills) each factored in at least five blocks -- part of the team's 12 on the day. On the back end,
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray and
Mina Regnery picked up 17 and 11 digs, respectively.
For Roger Williams, Brianna Picchietti had 12 kills and Ella Hohmann added nine more behind a .364 hitting percentage. Kaylee Jackson totaled 22 digs, and Ava Mattiucci posted a double-double of 15 digs with 15 assists. Emma Bosco put up 19 assists.
The Nor'easters stay at home for a Wednesday (7 p.m.) date with Gordon College.
