BOSTON -- Wentworth Institute of Technology overcame an early 1st-set deficit on the way to a 3-0 decision (25-23, 25-19, 25-13) against the University of New England as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball schedule got underway Tuesday night (Sep. 20) at Tansey Gymnasium.
UNE led 10-7 in the opening frame until an 8-1 stretch flipped the advantage in favor of the hosts. The Leopards were up 22-16 before a string of errors let the Nor'easters back in (23-22, 24-23), but a kill by Ashley Cao sealed it for WIT. The visitors took a 17-16 edge in the 2nd stanza, but Wentworth received a couple aces from Ema Thompson in the middle of seven unanswered to turn things around and gain a two-set cushion. Play was still tight during the initial moments of the 3rd (7-6) before WIT took control.
For Wentworth (7-4, 1-0 CCC), the balanced attack was paced by eight kills from Helen Barthe. Riley Waggoner and Vivian Goulet put down seven and six winners, respectively, while Cao went for a well-rounded six kills, match-best 14 digs, eight assists, three aces, and three blocks. Lexi Zabloudil helped shape the offense with 15 assists, and Thompson saved 11 digs on the back side.
The Nor'easters (1-8, 0-1 CCC) got a match-high 10 kills out of
Lauren Davenport.
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray totaled 12 digs for the defense, and seven more digs came from
Addie Miller, who registered 16 assists.
