BIDDEFORD, Maine – Morgan Smiley scored a first-half goal to lift the Bowdoin College women's soccer team past the University of New England in non-conference action at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Wednesday evening.

In the 17th minute, Isa Quintana broke the ball free from a UNE defender just outside the box and found Smiley who booted it to the far left corner for the only goal of the game. The Polar Bears had another goal in the first half called back due to offsides.

The Nor'easter defense was able to keep Bowdoin from extending the lead in the second half. Ariel Martin was well-tested in the period and made six of her seven saves in the final 45 minutes. UNE had possession deep in the Bowdoin zone late in the match, but were unable to knot the score.

Shots favored the Polar Bears 30-6 on the night. Alex Arndt made one save in the victory.

UNE opens Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday at home against Roger Williams at 12 p.m.
