SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Kailey Carrano hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the 5th inning of the second game to lift Western New England University to a 3-2 result against the University of New England as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball regular season wrapped up Sunday afternoon (May 1) at Golden Bear Park. Carrano also homered in the opener of the doubleheader, which the hosts took in five innings, 8-0.
The Golden Bears (25-13, 14-4 CCC) secure the No.2 seed for the 2022 CCC Softball Championship, and will entertain half of the bracket during the first two days of the tournament. The Nor'easters (17-21, 10-8) will head right back there as the No.3 seed.
On Wednesday (12:15 p.m.), UNE is slated to take on sixth seed Salve Regina University. The Nor'easters hit the road in early April and swept the Seahawks, 10-6 and 8-4.
Grace Tutt upped her hit streak to 13 games with one base-knock in each of Sunday's contests.
UNE struck first in
GAME 2 (WNEU 3-2), as
Makenzy Herron singled and stole second, and
Abby Miner notched an RBI-single. Things were even after one full frame, though; a two-out double from Carrano drove in Dina DiBlasio.
Herron doubled and reached third base with two away in the 3rd, and the Nor'easters had a couple in scoring position with one down in the 4th, however neither instance provided any runs. Miner did come through with another RBI-single in the 5th for a 2-1 edge, and Tutt followed with a two-out double, but that was it.
A two-out single by DiBlasio kept the last half of the 5th going, and that was when Carrano flipped the margin (3-2).
Megan Beebe allowed just one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the pitching decision in relief of starter Ava Blanchard, who fanned seven without a walk. DiBlasio shared the game high of three hits, and Cory Rizzo added a pair.
Herron had three hits and touched for both UNE runs.
Alie Martell struck out three over five-plus innings in the loss.
Beebe also got the win for the hosts in
GAME 1 (WNEU 8-0), giving up two hits over four innings. Carrano began her big day of five hits and six RBI with three of each in the opener. Her bat capped a five-run 2nd inning with a home run, and then an RBI-double in the 4th made it 7-0.
DiBlasio had an RBI-double of her own in the 2nd stanza, while Alex Ferriouolo connected for run-scoring hits in the 1st and 4th innings.
Jordan Strum was tagged with the UNE loss in the circle, surrendering five earned runs before Martell finished things. Tutt and
Kate Wilmot recorded the only hits for the Nor'easters.
