BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team trimmed a six-goal deficit to two late but were unable to complete the comeback in a 14-10 defeat to Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at UNE Blue Bolt Field.

Anna Stowell scored four straight goals for the Nor'easters (2-10, 1-4 CCC) in a span of just 2:14 in the fourth quarter to trim the margin to 11-9 with 9:14 remaining in the game. Stowell finished with a career-best six goals on the day and now leads the team with 22 this season.

The Seahawks (6-2, 3-1 CCC) got some insurance from there as they scored the next three. Cameron Baston put in two in-a-row before Nicole Smith added her fifth of the afternoon to make it 14-9 with 4:17 to play. Kelsey Hartigan buried a late goal for UNE.

Kelly Ventura and Kathryn Mullin scored the only two goals of the first quarter to give Salve Regina an early lead. Smith made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors before Hartigan and Stowell closed the gap to one for UNE at the 8:28 mark of the second quarter. The Seahwaks pulled away and led 7-2 at halftime.

Nicole Corriveau found Stowell for a marker to start the second half. Abby McHallam won the ensuing draw and scored off an assist from Hartigan to make the score 7-4 with 12:42 remaining in the third.

Grace Haesche stopped 11 shots in goal for the Seahawks. Madison Bruzzese had 10 saves for UNE.

The Nor'easters are back in action on the road at Gordon on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
