Nor’easters pull away from Leopards, 14-8

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team scored seven straight goals late in the second half to pull away from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in a 14-8 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday night.
 
Paige DeVries broke a 7-7 tie with a free-position goal to give the Nor'easters (2-9, 1-3 CCC) a slim advantage after three quarters of play. UNE took command of the game from there, scoring the first six goals of the fourth quarter.
 
Morgan started the period with a top-shelf goal at the 12:52 mark of the fourth, her first of two in the quarter [Watch]. Just over a minute later Morgan Mast found Anne Chapman for score to match the Nor'easters' largest lead to that point. Chapman connected with a cutting Nicole Corriveau for a quick goal with 8:42 left to play as UNE extended the advantage to 11-7 [Watch]. White, Kelsey Hartigan, and Skylar McComas each added unassisted markers to close out the Nor'easter run and put the game out of reach.
 
UNE never trailed and struck first in the opening minute of the game as Corriveau found Anna Stowell for one of her three goals. Jorgie Pashalian knotted the game up for Wentworth (2-4, 0-1 CCC) before Hartigan and Stowell gave the Nor'easters the lead back at 3-1 with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter. Each team added another and UNE led 4-2 after a period.
 
The Nor'easters built a 6-3 lead with 9:30 remaining in the first half after goals by White and Abby McHallam. The Leopards were able to get one back before halftime and trailed 6-4 midway through the game.
 
Wentworth scored three of the first four goals of the second half to tie it up before the late run by UNE put the game away.
 
Morgan Bruzzese backstopped the victory with nine saves for the Nor'easters. Lily Kuhns made two stops in the loss for the Leopards.
 
UNE returns to the field on Saturday against Salve Regina at 1 p.m.
