Wentworth edges UNE, 12-9

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology picked up a 12-9 victory over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The game was tied at 6-6 heading into the second half before Erik Vogt scored two quick goals to start the third for the Leopards (6-2, 2-0 CCC) and give them an 8-6 lead. Sam Prunier added his first of three goals on the day with 9:26 left in the quarter to put Wentworth ahead 9-6, the largest lead by either team to that point.
 
UNE (4-8, 0-3 CCC) with back-to-back goals by Kyle Kennedy and Sam McGregor to close the gap to 9-8 with 4:05 left in the third. Drew Bouley scored in the final minute to give the Leopards a two-goal cushion.
 
Bouley and Prunier connected for two goals in the fourth quarter to put Wentworth ahead by four at 12-8 with 3:11 remaining in the game. Cole Currie found Kennedy with 38 seconds left of the final UNE goal.
 
After falling behind in the opening minute, the Nor'easters battled back to hold a 3-2 lead after a quarter. McGregor, Andrew Lawrence, and Ryan Hazard had early goals for UNE. Colin Watt added an unassisted score to start the second quarter and give the Nor'easters their largest lead of the game.
 
Bouley scored twice in a span of 46 seconds to knot the game up 4-4 for the Leopards and the teams traded goals for the remainder of the first half.
 
Wentworth outshot UNE 38-30 overall and 27-21 on goal. Matt Deyette made 15 saves in the loss. Jack Munroe had 12 stops for the Leopards.
 
The Nor'easters are back in action at home on Saturday against Salve Regina at 4 p.m.
