GORHAM, Maine – The University of New England allowed just two goals the rest of the way after falling behind in the second quarter on its way to a 14-7 victory over Southern Maine in men's lacrosse action at Hannaford Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Andrew Lawrence led the Nor'easters (3-3) with four goals and two assists.
Jordan White added three goals and an assist.
Kyle Kennedy had a pair of goals and assists.
White put UNE on the board 2:19 into the game off a pass from
Ryan Hazard as the teams traded goals in the first quarter. Schuyler Wetmore answered for the Huskies (1-1), but just 44 seconds later
Sam McGregor put the Nor'easters back in front. After Nick James tied the game once again, White scored his second of the game in the final minute of the quarter to put UNE in front 3-2 after one period.
Lawrence extended the lead to 4-2 in the opening minute of the second with help from an assist by White. James scored twice and assisted on another goal for USM as it put in three straight to jump in front 5-4 at the 7:13 mark of the quarter. Kennedy, Lawrence, and McGregor answered for UNE with three goals in the span of a minute as the Nor'easters held a 7-5 advantage at halftime.
The Huskies were able to hang close in the early part of the second half, but a six-goal run for UNE spanning the final two quarters put the game out of reach. Lawrence scored his final two goals of the game early in the fourth quarter.
Gabriel Martin and
Alden Balboni also scored as the Nor'easters led by as many eight before it was over.
Shots favored UNE 45-42 on the day and the Nor'easters also held a 30-22 advantage in ground balls.
Matt Deyette made eight saves in goal in the victory. Nathan Plourde had 14 stops for the Huskies in the loss.
UNE is on the road against UMass Boston on Saturday at 1 p.m.
