BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New England men's lacrosse team outscored Emerson College 6-1 over the final 11:32 of play, but it wasn't enough as the Lions held on for a 14-13 victory on Wednesday evening at Rotch Field.
Down 13-7 with 11:32 to play,
Kyle Kennedy and
Ryan Hazard each scored just under a minute apart to trim the Nor'easter deficit to 13-9. Following a tally by Hunter Gervais, UNE scored four straight to pull within one with 3:31 remaining.
Jordan White had a chance to tie it late for the Nor'easters, but his attempt was saved by Malcolm McGrath.
The Nor'easters (2-2) looked like they were going to run away with it as they jumped out to a 6-2, first quarter lead.
Ryan Hazard had two of his team-high four goals in the first quarter.
Emerson took control of the second quarter, outscoring UNE 5-0, including three goals by Nicholas Fulgione, to take a 7-6 lead at the half.
The third quarter was much of the same for the Lions as goals by Fulgione and Birk Swan extended the advantage out to 9-6 with 9:17 remaining. White added his third of the night for UNE, but the Lions were able to add two more goals to pull ahead 11-7 after three.
Fulgione led all scorers with six goals and an assist. Gervais had four goals for Emerson who improve to 4-0 on the young season.
Andrew Lawrence had two goals for the Nor'easters.
McGrath made 14 saves in the cage for the Lions in the victory.
Matt Deyette had 11 stops for UNE.
The Nor'easters return home against MIT on Saturday at 12 p.m.
