Wheaton tops UNE, 11-6, in opener

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College picked up an 11-6 victory over the University of New England in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Nordin Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
UNE (0-1) grabbed an early lead after goals by Kyle Kennedy and Alden Baldoni put the Nor'easters in front 4:27 into play. The Lyons trimmed the deficit to one with a goal by Alex Morin. Charlie Racine found Ethan Powers for a score with four seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game.
 
Wheaton (2-0) took control in the second as it outscored UNE 4-1. Robert Sullivan put in his first of four goals in the game to start the period. Morin answered as the Lyons led 4-2 with 4:28 to play until halftime. Jordan White connected with Colin Watt for a man-up goal just over a minute later to bring the Nor'easters back within one, but Lou Mainella and Max Cooper scored to make it 6-3 in favor of the hosts at halftime.
 
UNE would never get closer than two the rest of the way. Sullivan scored to start the third quarter, giving the Lyons their largest lead of the game to that point. Sam McGregor found the back of the net and later hit Ryan Hazard for a goal as the Nor'easters made it 7-5 with 6:04 left in the third. Sullivan added his third in the final minute of the quarter.
 
Kennedy brought UNE back within two with his second goal of the day at the start of the fourth quarter. Wheaton would score the final three goals of the game.
 
The Lyons played tough on defense and forced 34 turnovers and Jacob Wharton had three caused turnovers for Wheaton. Corey Bannon made eight saves in the win. Matt Deyette had 10 stops for UNE in the loss.
 
Jared Duffy was 15-of-19 in the face-off circle for the Nor'easters.
 
UNE opens its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon against Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m.
