#11 UNE storms back to down Salve Regina, 4-3; clinches top seed

BIDDEFORD, Maine Justin Dixson scored a third-period goal as the #11 University of New England men's ice hockey team erased a two-goal deficit to defeat Salve Regina, 4-3, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle on Friday.
 
The Nor'easters' seventh victory in-a-row locked up the top seed in the upcoming conference championship, as they stand at 17-3-1 overall and 16-3-1 (49 points) in league play. Salve Regina now sits 16-6-2 overall and tied for second in the CCC at 14-4-2 (44 points).
 
With the score tied 3-3 early in the third period, Collin Heinold launched a shot off the back boards that was corralled by Anthony Sciucco near the net. Sciucco fed Dixson cutting through the slot and the senior scored the game-winner with 16:53 left to play [Watch].
 
The UNE penalty kill was able to keep the Seahawks off the board during a long 5-on-3 power play midway through the third period. The hosts also staved off an extra-man opportunity in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
 
Jared Christy put the Nor'easters in front only 53 seconds into the night as Austin Morgan found him with a centering pass through the Salve Regina defense. He becomes the fifth player to reach double-digits in goals with his tenth [Watch].
 
The Seahawks answered with three straight goals. Seth Benson tied the score at the 14:15 mark of the period with a turnaround shot after a pass off the boards by Ethan DeStefani. Mitch Walinski scored his CCC-leading 17th goal of the year to put Salve Regina ahead. Brendan Kim extended the advantage to 3-1 with a score at the 4:31 mark of the opening period.
 
Ryan Kuzmich found Anthony Scuicco for a goal during on odd-man rush to trim the deficit to 3-2 heading into the first intermission [Watch]. UNE made the most of a long power play chance in the second period to tie the score. Collin Heinold got past a defender near the blue line and blasted a shot into the net for his second goal of the season with 5:26 left in the period [Watch].
 
Billy Girard IV stopped 19 shots in the victory. Nicholas Latinovich made 24 saves for Salve Regina.
 
The Nor'easters close out the regular season on the road tomorrow night at Nichols at 5:40 p.m.
