BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Gordon College used a 19-2 run just before the midway mark of the 2nd half to separate from the University of New England in an 87-75 result on Wednesday night (Feb. 16) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Fighting Scots (10-12, 7-10 CCC) clinch the seventh seed and will host one of two first-round games in the league tournament on Monday -- a recent change to the 2022 championship by the conference membership.

The Nor'easters (6-18) drop to 5-12 in the CCC and are slated to visit Wentworth Institute of Technology (6-11 CCC) on Saturday to decide the home team in Monday's other matchup. UNE holds the head-to-head edge entering the duel after rallying out of a late double-digit deficit to defeat the Leopards back on January 19 (70-65).

Gordon broke away from the Nor'easters immediately following things becoming tied at 47-all during the initial portion of the closing stanza. Garrett Sattazahn splashed a triple on the next trip for the visitors, and accounted for 11 points in the stretch which established a 66-49 margin with 10:20 remaining. UNE managed to whittle it down to nine (76-67) with 3:03 left, but Bryce Smith scored all but one of the Scots' points the rest of the way -- including 8-of-8 at the charity stripe -- to seal the decision.

Between 18 offensive rebounds and seven less turnovers, the Nor'easters fired off 23 more shots than Gordon. However, UNE connected at a 36-percent clip (29-for-81), while the visitors made 50 percent of their field goal looks (29-of-58). Both squads hit 14 three-pointers at comparable rates, and the Fighting Scots had a +12 scoring advantage at the line (15-3).

Sattazahn canned 5-of-9 from deep en route to a game-high 19 points. Smith ended with 15 points, eight boards, seven assists, and three steals. After Treyton Tebbs' 14 points, Parker Omslaer posted 12 points, a match-best nine caroms, six blocks, and five helpers. Justin Yu added all of his nine points from downtown.

Avery DeBrito topped the hosts with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Similarly, Drake Gavin went for 15 points, five boards, and four dimes. Ray Evans and Michael Quinn each contributed 11 points off the bench; Evans also picked up six caroms and three steals.

Gordon turned in a 13-2 spurt during the 1st period to take a 23-15 lead after a few exchanges in the early going. Of the Scots' last seven makes in the half, six were in the half were from long range -- included two by Zach Quanico -- as the gap increased to 12 (43-31) with 3:24 prior to intermission. The Nor'easters chipped away at the spread with the final six of the frame (43-37), though, and then an Evans triple capped a 10-4 start to the 2nd as UNE pulled even at the 15:24 mark.
