BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's swimming team racked up 10 individual event wins leading to a 163-62 result against Maine Maritime Academy and a 188-16 decision against Elms College on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12) at the Campus Center Pool.
Haley Griffin,
Olivia Roy,
Katie Durrua, and
Annika Doeppers each captured a pair for the Nor'easters. Griffin claimed the 100-freestyle (58.99) and 500-freestyle (5:54.54), and Durrua was tops in the 100-butterfly (1:08.03) and 50-butterfly (29.82).
The tightest finish of the day came in the 100-backstroke, as O.Roy (1:09.51) stretched ahead of teammate
Taylor Gibson by 0.2 seconds. Roy's other victory in the 50-backstroke (31.57) was by just 0.41 in front of Elizaveta Zhukov of MMA.
In addition to the 1000-freestyle (11:57.97), Doeppers posted a 1:10.40 to get first place in the 100-IM -- just under one second better than MMA's Megan Durrua, the twin sister of Katie.
April Falstad supported with the 200-freestyle (2:12.55), while
Jamie Roy clocked 27.69 to win the 50-freestyle. Two others were within one second of J.Roy in the fastest swim, M.Durrua (-0.39) and UNE's
Mia Meister (-0.92).
UNE also took the opening relay, the 200-yard medley (2:04.95), featuring Griffin,
Mary Washlick, Durrua, and O.Roy.
The Mariners' Ellie Gellerson (50-breaststroke; 37.15) and M.Durrua (100-breaststroke; 1:17.79) picked up top point values to aid the MMA cause.
The Nor'easters will head for Rhode Island in 12 days to start the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.
