SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Top seed Western New England University scored goals in the 26th, 49th, and 70th minutes to come away with a 3-0 result against No.2 University of New England to secure the 2022 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) at Suprenant Field.
It marks the first CCC tournament win for the Golden Bears (13-5-2), and comes with the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
The Nor'easters conclude 2022 with an 11-6-3 overall ledger after reaching the CCC final for the fourth time in program history.
Gabby Sansone got the hosts on the board past the midway point of the opening half, finishing a rebound off a block shot by Allison Bruehwiler. Bruehwiler sete up the second score, as well, crossing one from the right side into Isabella Montalvo for a right-footed shot past UNE goalie
Ariel Martin.
Western New England kept the pressure on, as Montalvo hit the left post in the 58th minute, and Martin was forced into a leaping save in the 63rd. Shortly after, Lindsay Reidy had a shot denied at the line by a UNE defender, but then netted the third goal off a feed from Brynn Murphy.
The Nor'easters had not allowed a goal through the first two rounds of the tournament.
Molly McLaughlin posted a three-save shutout for the Golden Bears, who had a 9-3 advantage in shots-on-goal despite the Nor'easters attempting more shots (19-15).
Martin ended with five saves over 75 minutes of action for UNE.
