RICHMOND, Va. -- University of New England head women's soccer coach
Carly Gettler was honored by the University of Richmond as part of the 'Team of Distinction' when the newest Athletics Hall of Fame class was celebrated on November 4.
Gettler graduated from Richmond in 2006, and played three seasons of soccer for the NCAA Division I Spiders. The Team of Distinction was the 2002 squad (her rookie season), which stacked up first-time program accomplishments that have not been matched in the years since. Under the direction of coach Peter Albright, Richmond defeated the top two seeds to capture the Atlantic 10 championship that year. The Spiders then knocked off Clemson University and James Madison University to reach the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship, where they lost of eventual champion University of Portland. The 2002 team set program records with 15 wins and finished with the No.16 ranking in the final national poll.
Gettler has guided the Nor'easters to a 54-35-10 record since 2017. UNE has gone 24-14-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action, played in the final three times out of five years, and came away with the program's second and third league crowns in 2018 and 2019. After no competition in 2020, the Nor'easters posted their highest finish in the CCC standings (2nd) and most conference wins (7) since 2011 during the 2021 campaign.
