Late power play lifts #14 Seahawks past #9 Nor’easters, 6-4

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Logan Calder completed a hat trick with a power-play goal with 1:15 left in regulation to break a late tie and lead #14 Salve Regina University past #9 University of New England in men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening.
 
With the game tied 4-4 late in the third period, a penalty on the Nor'easters led to a power-play opportunity for the Seahawks. Calder made the most of the extra-man advantage, scoring the eventual game-winning goal. Mitch Walinski added another late score for Salve Regina for the final margin.
 
UNE got out of the gate quickly in a high-scoring first period and pulled ahead 2-0 by the 12:04 mark of the frame. Alex Sheehy put in a power-play goal to start the night. Ryan Kuzmich and Logan DiScanio assisted on the go-ahead score. Collin Heinold added to the Nor'easter advantage with an unassisted goal.
 
Calder trimmed the deficit in half with his first of the night 11:43 into the first. Johnny Mulera and Brendan Kim provided assists on the goal. Matthew Brunton found Walinski for a power-play goal to tie the game with 3:04 to play in the opening period. The Seahawks scored five of their six goals with a man-advantage on the night.
 
Daniel Winslow scored his fourth goal in the last two games with help from Juraj Elias and Jake Fuss to put the Nor'easters back in front 3-2 with 1:28 to go in the first. Just 26 seconds later Mulera put in a short-handed score as the game stood tied 3-3 at the first intermission.
 
Anthony Sciucco put UNE back in front late in the second period. DiScanio recorded his second assist of the night on the goal. Calder knotted the game back up for Salve Regina in the final minute of the second.
 
The Seahawks outshot the Nor'easters 16-7 in the third period before adding the two late goals. Salve Regina held a 41-25 advantage in shots on the night. Kohl Reddy had 21 saves to earn the victory. Billy Girard took the loss in net with 35 saves.
 
UNE returns to the ice at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon against Stevenson at 4 p.m.
