Curry outlasts UNE, 3-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Curry College men's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over the #7 University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday night.
 
Timmy Kent put the Colonels on the board quickly as he took a pass off a face off from Eelis Laaksonen and scored top-shelf just 55 seconds into the game. Austin Bellefeuille found Nick Favaro at the top of the circle and Favaro scored just under the crossbar to extend the Curry lead to 2-0 with 7:07 to play in the second period.
 
The Nor'easters trimmed the deficit in half with 10:33 remaining in the game. Donte' DiPonio grabbed a loose puck near the blue line and fired it towards goal, off a Curry defender, and in. Jake Fuss and Anthony Sciucco assisted on the play. [Watch]
 
Four minutes later, Ben Biester poked the puck loose in the Nor'easter zone and connected with Leevi Selanne for a goal to put the Colonels back ahead by two at 3-1. Sciucco brought UNE back within one with 3:23 remaining, scoring his second goal in as many nights. Ryan Kuzmich left the puck in front for Scuicco who beat Curry goaltender Reid Cooper to the glove side for the goal [Watch]. The Nor'easters played the final 36 seconds with an extra man but were unable to tie the game.
 
UNE held a 33-27 advantage in shots on goal. Cooper earned the victory in net for Curry with 31 saves. Billy Girard had 24 saves in the loss.
 
The Nor'easters are back on the ice at home on Friday night against Salve Regina at 7 p.m.
